        Pre-Tournament Notes for November 1, 2023

FedExCup Fall: The 2023 World Wide Technology Championship is the fifth event of the FedExCup Fall, a group of seven tournaments played after the TOUR Championship that finalizes eligibility for the 2024 PGA TOUR Season. Nos. 1-50 in the FedExCup standings through the TOUR Championship are locked in their positions while Nos. 51 and beyond carry their FedExCup points over. Nos. 51-60 through the FedExCup Fall will qualify for two Signature Events in 2024: AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational. The Top 125 will be exempt into all Full-Field events and THE PLAYERS Championship next season and Nos. 126-150 will earn conditional status on TOUR next season.

Winners of events during the FedExCup Fall receive the same benefits of winners of Full-Field Events during the Regular Season, including 500 FedExCup points, Official World Golf Ranking points, a two-year PGA TOUR exemption (exempt thru 2025) and invitations to The Sentry, THE PLAYERS Championship, Masters Tournament and PGA Championship.

The World Wide Technology Championship became the first official PGA TOUR event played in Mexico in the modern era when it debuted in 2007, and holds the distinction as the first official TOUR event played outside the U.S. or Canada. This year marks the 17th playing of the event and for the first time, the tournament will be played at El Cardonal at Diamante. The course, which opened in 2014, is the first golf course designed by TGR Design, led by Tiger Woods. The 2023 World Wide Technology Championship is the first PGA TOUR event to be played on a course designed by the 82-time TOUR winner.

Mexico is one of eight countries/territories hosting at least one of the nine PGA TOUR events outside the United States this season (others: Bermuda, Canada, Dominican Republic, England, Japan, Puerto Rico, Scotland).

Two players in the field qualified for the TOUR Championship: Lucas Glover (No. 18), Emiliano Grillo (No. 29).

Five other players in the field qualified for the BMW Championship: Sahith Theegala (No. 31), Chris Kirk (No. 32), Andrew Putnam (No. 35), Adam Svensson (No. 37), Cameron Young (No. 42). Note: three of the four winners of the FedExCup Fall qualified for the BMW Championship: Sahith Theegala (Fortinet Championship), Tom Kim (Shriners Children's Open), Collin Morikawa (ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP).

The Next 10: Players in positions 51-60 in the FedExCup standings through the RSM Classic will be eligible for two Signature Events in 2024 (AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Genesis Invitational).

Nine of the 10 players currently ranked Nos. 51-60 are in the field: Beau Hossler (No. 51), Taylor Montgomery (No. 52), Nick Hardy (No. 53), Ben Griffin (No. 54), J.J. Spaun (No. 56), Mackenzie Hughes (No. 57), Stephan Jaeger (No. 58), Luke List (No. 59) Thomas Detry (No. 60). Not in field: Alex Smalley (No. 55).

Cameron Young, the highest-ranked player in the field at No. 17 in the Official World Golf Ranking, is making his first start on TOUR since finishing T15 at the BMW Championship. Young is making his tournament debut and has two top-10s in his last five starts on TOUR (T6/John Deere Classic, T8/The Open Championship).

Argentina’s Emiliano Grillo is making his consecutive start at the World Wide Technology Championship and has three top-10s in that span (T10/2016, T9/2017, T8/2020). Grillo has 12 top-25 finishes this season, his most in a season in his PGA TOUR career.

Maverick McNealy is making his first start since the RBC Canadian Open, missing nearly five months while dealing with a left shoulder injury. McNealy has made four starts at the event, finishing T12 or better in each of the last three years. McNealy, a two-time runner-up on TOUR, last recorded a top-10 at the 2023 Sony Open in Hawaii (T7).

World Wide Technology ambassador Keith Mitchell enters the week No. 68 in the FedExCup Fall standings. He finished in the top five at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and The Genesis Invitational in 2023, the two Signature Events for which he would qualify if he is among The Next 10 (Nos. 51-60 in the standings through The RSM Classic).

Chris Gotterup, who earned a PGA TOUR card for 2024 by finishing No. 23 on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Points List, is competing on a sponsor exemption. Gotterup, the 2022 Jack Nicklaus Award winner as the top player in NCAA Division I, has two top-10s in 13 starts on the PGA TOUR (T7/2022 Puerto Rico Open as an amateur, T4/2022 John Deere Classic).

Three players in the field qualified by finishing in the top 10 at one of the last two PGA TOUR events: Isaiah Salinda (T7 at the Shriners Children’s Open), Kensei Hirata (T6 at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP) and Ryo Ishikawa (T4 at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP). Players who finish in the top 10 this week will qualify for next week’s Butterfield Bermuda Championship if not otherwise exempt.

Salinda into the Shriners Children's Open via the Open Qualifier and went on to record his first top-10 in his ninth career PGA TOUR start. Salinda, who finished 80th on the 2023 Korn Ferry Tour Points List, represented the United States at the 2019 Walker Cup and played collegiately at Stanford, where his teammates included current PGA TOUR members Maverick McNealy and Brandon Wu.

Hirata, 22, is a two-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour this year. He is making his third start on the PGA TOUR, with all three coming this season (MC/The Open Championship, T6/ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP).

Ishikawa, who was a PGA TOUR member from the 2013 through 2016-17 seasons, is making his 158th career start on TOUR. He is a two-time runner-up on TOUR (2012 Puerto Rico Open, 2013 Shriners Children’s Open) and has made one prior start in the World Wide Technology Championship (T50/2016).
